WFA, WGAM and SJM Jointly Organise 10th Asian Wushu Championships

Top Wushu Artists Set to Face Off in Macau

(Macau, 3 June 2024) The “SJM 10th Asian Wushu Championships 2024,” organised by the Wushu Federation of Asia (“WFA”); undertaken by the Wushu General Association of Macau (“WGAM”); co-organised and title-sponsored by SJM Resorts, S.A. (“SJM”); co-organised by the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; and supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR Government (“DSEDJ”)and the Macao Government Tourism Office (“MGTO”), will be held from 12 to 15 September 2024 at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion in Macau. The press conference was held today at the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau (“Grand Lisboa Palace”) to provide the details about the upcoming Wushu event.

Guests attending the press conference included: Mr. Pun Weng Kun, President of the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; Mr. Chan Weng Kit, President of the WFA and President of the WGAM; Ms. Daisy Ho, Managing Director of SJM; Ms. Jennifer Si Tou, Head of Tourism Product and Events Department of MGTO; Mr. Chan Ka Leong, President of the Board of Directors of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau (“UGAMM”); Ms. Lei Lai Fong, Council Executive Director of the Women’s General Association of Macau (“AGMM”); and Mr. Leong Chong Leng, Executive Director of the SJM 10th Asian Wushu Championships 2024 Organising Committee. SJM’s mascot “Sam the Rooster” also made a special appearance in Kung Fu costume to promote this year’s Wushu event.

Mr. Chan Weng Kit, President of the WFA said: “SJM’s long-standing dedication and support for the wushu industry has made it possible for the ‘SJM 10th Asian Wushu Championships 2024’ to be held in Macau, and SJM’s significant contributions are crucial for the success of the championships. We would also like to thank the Sports Bureau for co-organising the event, as well as the tremendous support from DSEDJ and MGTO, who provided valuable advice, guidance and support in the preparation and hosting of this championship event.”

Ms. Daisy Ho, Managing Director of SJM remarked, “As we celebrate the dual milestones of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of the Macao SAR, we view this Wushu event, steeped in rich Chinese traditions, as a fitting representation of our nation’s cultural vibrancy and pride. With our experience co-organising the past edition of the Asian Junior Wushu Championships, we are proud to co-organise the 10th Asian Wushu Championships for the first time this year. We look forward to seeing wushu artists excel, demonstrate their skills, and engage in meaningful cultural exchanges through the spirit of friendly competition.”

The Asian Wushu Championships is one of the highest-level wushu events in Asia, bringing together the elite wushu athletes from across the region to showcase the valuable cultural heritage and the remarkably diverse styles of wushu in Asia. This championship is not only a test of skills, but also an important platform for boosting awareness and the development of Asian wushu. The aim of this competition is to promote greater exchange and collaboration among the wushu community throughout Asia and to jointly promote the growth of wushu into the future.

As a multicultural destination, Macau is inextricably linked to wushu. The Macao SAR Government has always been committed to preserving and promoting traditional Chinese culture, encouraging youths to participate in wushu to further develop the sport, while also promoting wushu to audiences worldwide. In recent years, Macau has hosted three major Wushu events – the “7th Asian Wushu Championships” in 2008, the “5th Asian Junior Wushu Championships” in 2009, and the “2023 SJM 11th Asian Junior Wushu Championships” in August last year. This year, Macau is honoured to bring Asia’s highest-level wushu competition to the city once again, giving locals and tourists the opportunity to learn more about Chinese wushu.

As one of the main organisers, the WGAM will make certain preparations are properly made to ensure the competition runs smoothly. The association will also strictly abide by the standards and requirements of the International Wushu Federation (“IWUF”) and the WFA to formulate detailed requirements of the competition rules for a fair, just, and transparent competition.

This championship brings together many of the world’s highest-ranking wushu teams. More than 20 countries and regions with around 300 athletes are expected to participate and compete for 41 championship titles.

The “SJM 10th Asian Wushu Championships 2024” main competitions are: Taolu and Sanda. For Taolu, competitions are divided into individual and duals events. Individual events for men and women include: Changquan, Nanquan, Taijiquan and Pair Taijiquan (no gender restrictions), Daoshu, Jianshu, Nandao and Taijiquan, Qiangshu, Gunshu, Nangun and dual events.

For Sanda, there are: Men: 48kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 65kg, 70kg, 75kg, 80kg, 85kg, 90kg, and above 90kg. Women: 48kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 65kg, 70kg and 75kg.

The “SJM 10th Asian Wushu Championships 2024” will be conducted in accordance with the 

“IWUF Wushu Taolu Competition Rules & Judging Methods (2019)” and the “IWUF Wushu Sanda Competition Rules & Judging Methods (2017)”.
