Wushu has been an official discipline at the Asian Games since the 1990 Beijing Games. The wushu event for the 20th Asian Games will take place from September 20 to 24 at the Aichi Prefectural Martial Arts Hall (or Aichi Budokan), featuring a total of 15 gold medals (9 for men, 6 for women) split across two main disciplines: Taolu and Sanda. 

Dating back to 1987, the inaugural Asian Wushu Championships were held in Yokohama, Japan. Nearly 40 years later, major Asian wushu compeitions return to Japan, echoing the Games' theme "Imagine One Asia" to showcase traditional Asian martial arts culture. 

Looking back at the evolution of wushu in the Asian Games: Wushu Taolu debuted at the 1990 Beijing Games, presenting styles such as Changquan, Nanquan, and Taijiquan to the world. The 1998 Bangkok Games officially introduced Sanda, elevating the combat aspect of wushu to its peak. At the 2010 Guangzhou Games, the Wushu Federation of Asia (WFA) further promoted gender equality by introducing women's Sanda for the first time. From its single-category beginnings to a mature program featuring Taolu and Sanda with 15 gold medals at the Nagoya Games, the WFA has successfully built this regional traditional sport into one of Asia's most captivating and culturally significant core events. 

The Aichi Nagoya Asian Games has attracted teams and athletes from 28 countries and regions, including 108 athletes in Taolu and 100 in Sanda. Beyond competing for medals, athletes will also use wushu to promote cultural exchange across Asia.

Wushu Taolu is a routine demonstration discipline. Athletes perform Taolu movements incorporating balance and high-difficulty techniques on a designated carpet, scored holistically by judges on technical execution, performance quality, and degree of difficulty. The events featured at this edition of the Asian Games include: 

Men's Events:  Changquan, Nanquan & Nangun All-Around, Taijiquan & Taijijian All-Around, Daoshu & Gunshu All-Around 

Women's Events:  Changquan, Nanquan & Nandao All-Around, Taijiquan & Taijijian All-Around, Jianshu & Qiangshu All-Around 

Wushu Sanda is a full-contact combat event. Athletes engage in one-on-one hand-to-hand combat on an open platform (leitai), using striking, kicking, and throwing Wushu techniques in a single-elimination tournament divided by weight categories (5 men's categories, 2 women's categories). 

Men's Weight Categories:  56 kg, 60 kg, 65 kg, 70 kg, 75 kg 

Women's Weight Categories:  52 kg, 60 kg
